Understanding Gastric Sleeve

Description: It involves partial removal of stomach and creation of a much narrower tube shaped stomach pouch called the “sleeve.”

Is it an invasive procedure? In most of the cases, the surgeon performs the surgery laparoscopically in a minimally invasive manner by making 4-5 tiny incisions (about 0.25 to 0.5 inches long) in the belly.

How does one lose weight after surgery? The procedure involves removal of nearly 80% of the stomach. This puts restrictions on the amount of food you eat in one go by making you feel satisfied with really small quantities of food.

What happens during surgery?

  • After administration of general anesthesia, the surgeon will make several tiny incisions in the abdomen.
  • Special surgical instruments and a laparoscope (a tiny camera with light transmitting pictures to the computer screen in the OT to give a full view of the abdominal cavity) will be inserted through these incisions
  • About three-fourth of the stomach will be removed along its outer cruvature.
  • A new stomach pouch shaped like a tube or a sleeve spanning will be created
  • The inner curvature of the”sleeved stomach” runs from the esophagus to the small intestine just like it did before surgery.
  • No changes are made to the pyloric valve (a band of muscles which regulates transition of food from the stomach to the intestine).
